The proportion of renewable power stations has now reached a level on the way to a comprehensive supply from renewable energy sources that a supply guarantee with the functional principles of an electrical grid, which have been tried and tested for decades, can no longer ensure. "Smarter" concepts, which are foreseen for the integration of intelligent electrical grid components, can solve this problem and become an alternative to grid expansion measures.

STE Smart Grid

The LEYBOLD STE “Smart Grid” provides illustrative experiments about the topics:

  • Volatile Generation
  • Working Methods of common electrical grids
  • Problems with the Integration of Renewable Energies
  • Working Methods from "Smart" Solutions

The interpretation of the gained measurement values enables the creation of an interesting lesson which, alongside the technical competence, especially develops the communication and evaluation capabilities of the students and add physical arguments to their opinions with regard to discussions about the energy transition.

Topics and scope of experiments (in extracts):

  • Fundamental principles for energy generation with photovoltaic and wind energy as well as fundamental principles for energy storage systems
  • Experiments for supplying a building by utilising conventional power stations and in combination with photovoltaic systems, wind energy and energy storage
  • Scenario experiments for conductor cable monitoring and for more complex smart grid systems as well as their behaviour in cases of malfunction

STE Battery Technology

Which battery type for which application? Apprentices are able to work out the answer to this question themselves by utilising the "Battery Technology" kit. The didactic concept of the new LEYBOLD plug-in systems (STE) is aimed towards independent acquisition of knowledge.

Topics and scope of experiments (in extracts):

  • The internal resistance of power sources
  • Jointly switching power sources
  • U-I-characteristic curves of various accumulator models

STE Wind energy & electricity generation

Without wind – no electricity. In vocational education it is necessary to go beyond the scope of this simplified realisation. The LEYBOLD STE "Wind energy" was developed in order to support this part of the training with a modern teaching system.

Topics and scope of experiments (in extracts):

  • Energy Balance and Efficiency of a Wind Energy Turbine
  • U-I-Characteristic Curve and Revolutions of a Wind Energy Turbine
  • Revolutions and Power in conjunction with the Wind Speed

STE Solar Energy & Electricity Generation

The surface area used for electricity generation with solar systems increases from year to year. With the installation, maintenance and project management of these systems, a new branch of industry has developed which demands special knowledge and abilities. With the STE Experimental Kit "Solar Energy and Electricity Generation", trainees are able to cover all relevant teaching content in application-oriented experiments.

Topics and scope of experiments (in extracts):

  • Dependence of solar cell power on the strength and type of illumination
  • U-I-Characteristic curve of the solar cell under various operating conditions
  • Functionality of shunt, series and PWM regulators
